Event Report

The 2021 event was the fourth annual National Drive Electric Week (NDEW) event to be held at the Miller Public Library in Hamden. The EV car show took place on a sunny autumnal day.

Prior to the event, 134 people registered on the NDEW website, the highest number of enrollments for 2021 NDEW events in New England to date. Pre-event registrations included 29 EVs (15 separate models). We estimate that around 150 to 175 people attended. Attendees came from elsewhere in Connecticut and nearby states.

Attendees at our event were representative of diverse local communities and age groups. They also ranged from long-time EV owners to individuals newly introduced to EVs.

EV models shown at the event were brought by EV owner/drivers and represented a broad range of EVs and PHEVs, including the Chevrolet Bolt; Tesla Models 3, S and Y; Volkswagen ID.4; Audi e-tron; BMW i3; Kia Nero Electric; Subaru Crosstrek PHEV AWD; Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid; Nissan Leaf; Hyundai KONA Electric; and Toyota Prius Prime. Other vehicles included an electric battery-powered go-cart and an EV conversion of a Ford Ranger pickup.

At our information table, we distributed flyers and brochures about the cost-saving and clean-air advantages of driving an EV, including those provided by Plug In America and the Electric Auto Association, as well as up-to-date information about state and federal financial incentives. In addition, we created three additional handouts of our own.

Attendees experienced test rides of different EV models, for which we conducted pre- and post-test ride surveys (supported by a grant from Electrify America). Riders who completed the survey received a $10.00 gift certificate for Panera Restaurant.

We wish to thank the Hamden NDEW staff, including members of the Hamden Energy Use and Climate Change Commission, as well as the Miller Public Library.

A Free EV Car Show and Information Session

Registered EV owners should arrive at 11:00 a.m. to get ready for the event. If you have any questions, email us at rlangdon1@mac.com.

The Energy Use and Climate Change Commission of the Town of Hamden is planning a “live” in-person NDEW event on Saturday, 25 September 2021, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Miller Public Library.

Learn about why most auto manufacturers are converting to electric and why your next car, truck or SUV will be an EV! There is no need to wait: the future is already here!

Live, In-Person EVent at Miller Public Library

For the fourth consecutive year, our live, in-person EVent will be hosted by the Miller Public Library on Saturday, 25 September, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Experienced EV owners will display their EVs and will discuss why they are enthusiastic about their all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles and how they use them on their daily commutes and long-distance drives, as well as how they charge the cars’ batteries.

Guided test rides will be provided by experienced EV owners.

Owners of EVs and plug-In hybrid vehicles are encouraged to register for this live event and to bring their vehicles for all or part of the event. Start by clicking on the "Participate" button above. We encourage attendees (those who are new to EVs) to register for this event by clicking on the “RSVP” button above; you will receive updates prior to the day of the event.

Attendees will learn about the differences between electric vehicles and conventional gas-powered cars (including why EVs are much less expensive to operate and maintain), the widespread locations and different types of charging stations, the wide range of EV models available now and the much wider range of EVs to be released in the near future. The event will also highlight the benefits of electric vehicles for the environment and for public health.

Attendees will receive informational handouts and will also learn about special savings programs for Connecticut EV drivers, including state rebates and federal tax credits, for purchasing and leasing electric vehicles. Information about great deals on used EVs will also be available.

We are following the CDC and Town of Hamden guidelines for ensuring the safety of our staff, participants and attendees by asking all to wear a mask and/or maintain a six-foot distance from each other during the event.

Test rides and drives are supported by funding from Electrify America.
